class etiquette

  1. Bow to the Dojang whenever you enter or leave the room. Bowing represents respect for the school and the art we practice.

  2. If arriving late for class, you should bow to the flags and perform meditation on your own before joining class.

  3. Uniforms should be clean and pressed with the Hapkido patch attached. If you own one of the black Hapkido t-shirts, it should also be worn during class.

  4. The class instructor should be addressed as “Instructor/Master” or “Sir”.

  5. Horseplay or distracting/loud conversations in the Dojang are not acceptable. This interrupts other students’ enjoyment of the class.

  6. All students must be courteous and obey the instructor. Advanced students should set a good example for the newer students.

  7. Do not demonstrate or teach Hapkido outside the school without express permission of the instructor. Never degrade Hapkido or the reputation of your school.

  8. Each student is a member of our family. Please let us know if you are ill, going on vacation, or will be absent for an extended period.

  9. All students are responsible to keep the Dojang clean.

  10. Do not attempt to practice techniques you have not been shown directly by your instructor.

  11. Always demonstrate respect for each other and take it upon yourself to help and encourage junior students.

  12. Students need to be careful of wearing jewelry. Rings with elevated gemstones, hoop earrings, necklaces, watches, and bracelets should not be worn.

  13. If you need to leave class early, ask the instructor for permission to leave and bow to the flags before exiting.

  14. Attend class regularly to ensure your success. If you are unable to participate in class, you can still learn by watching your classmates. Observing will help you to understand much about Hapkido.
