How to be a better martial artist

By GM Rudy Timmerman

Based on the ancient values of the DO (doe), translated “the way”, martial art etiquette sets traditional martial arts apart from just about any other form of pugilism.  In addition to teaching fighting skills, a traditional martial art school will also focus on instilling in their students certain values that produce good citizens who care about their fellow human beings, are humble, but posses an indomitable spirit that allows them to walk with noticeable confidence. A traditional martial artist will come to the aid with those in need without expecting anything in return.  He will be loyal to his parents, his country, his school, and his instructor; appreciating the values that they taught him and continuing the old tradition of the DO.

Here are 10 hints to help you become a better martial artist:

  1. Show respect whenever the opportunity arises.

  2. Bow when entering anyplace where martial arts are practiced.

  3. Greet your instructors by coming up to them to say “hello” or “goodbye.”

  4. Always say “yes sir/mame” when a teacher speaks to you or to the class.

  5. Bow to your classmates when beginning or ending a practice session with them.

  6. Bow when you leave the practice area.

  7. Wear a clean a dobok and keep yourself and your school clean at all times.

  8. Do not talk loud or boisterous in class and practice to the best of your ability.

  9. The greatest compliment you can give to your school is to bring in your friends.

  10. If you respect your teacher inside your school, why not do so outside?  He/She is still the same teacher and respect has no boundaries.

These are only a few of the courtesies that will make you a better martial artist.  Make no mistake about it, those who practice the “DO” are immediately recognized as superior martial artist by their peers.
